My discus has black spots on him, he has always had a small amount but as he grows there seems to be more. Is this normal?

I also have a guppy that has gotten quite bloated and it now hovering around the bottom of the tank breathing heavy. I thought I had all males but I have no clue as I am very new to fish keeping.

I have attached photos of both

What are you water parameters?

I don't know anything about discus, so I can't help you there.

Your guppy is definitely male.  How often are you feeding him?  He might be suffering from overfeeding.  If not, he may have dropsy.

LIkewise, I can't help you on the discus.

I would say that the guppy does not have dropsy, but does look very bloated. Try feeding a mashed pea, this often helps with constipated fish. Boil a pea in unsalted water for a few mins, take it out of its shell, and mash it under the back of a fork.

I've just recently learned (by reading a link shared by another board member) that feeding daphnia works too to help constipation.  I had a 3 month old platy very recently who was having swim bladder issues and possible constipation... I feed them nothing but daphnia for a couple of days and it cleared it right up.  My guppies never did eat peas... so if you can't get yours to try peas, try some daphnia instead.  I will go and find that link for you too.

Also no idea about the discus... could it be just developing its color?

Here you go.

The spots on your discus are what is called "peppering." It is fairly common on pigeon blood varieties of discus, and can be caused by a variety of things. Peppering in young discus is thought to be sometimes a product of stress, poor water quality, poor quality discus, etc. Having a dark coloured background or a dark substrate in your tank will bring out the pepper effect much more intensely. Do you have a dark substrate/background? Where did you get your discus from if you don't mind me asking, and how old are they? It looks like they are in a community, planted tank?

Hit the nail on the head exactly :) I also find that in high nitrate it can cause black dots to form sometimes in large flat sided cichlids.
