black playsand here £14 for 10kg - not cheap but best i was able to find

i had same issue when i wanted black sand. needed 3 bags and it dunt even look black under high light. gutted.

I haven't seen any black sand for under £15 but saying that. I do know seapets do a 20lb (9kg) for around £16, I saw some in the shop and it looked quite good. Then again, its still a bit on the expensive side if you want to fill a rio 300 and I haven't actually seen it in a tank under aquarium lighting. But if you want to stay cheap just go for normal sand. The link is:

I think that's fine gravel rather than sand. I'm not see any proper colour sand yet, apart from moonsand I supposed!

Considering P&P, might be cheaper to get it from a LFS. They sell them in LFS around me.

When I was in the shop, it looked liked sand, the picture does look like really fine gravel but I think somewhere it says that it is either 1cmx1cm or 3cmx3cm which they have just enlarged so it looks more like gravel. But saying that I could be wrong and I think that would be a good idea twodoctors

The nicest black sand I've seen is Tahitian Moon sand, as mentioned by Duz - 20lb from about £16 online in various aquatic shops. I've seen it in my LFS and it does look like the texture of sand but larger grains. If I was going for a black substrate that's the one I'd choose. Might not be exactly cheap but sometimes it's worth paying that bit extra for a great effect in the aquarium.

I have a sample of the black play sand being delivered. I'll upload some pics when it arrives. I like playsand, its soft and very fine.
