I bought two BMS's at the LFS the other day. I put one in with the dojos and pleco, and one in with Kita. These are ok with a betta, correct? He poked at it once and hasnt even looked at it since. Just want to make sure that BMS's aren't too dirty or whatnot. I drop a small piece of algae wafer in there for it once a day. It's not enough to cloud the water and I didn't think it would be a problem since the tank is filtered. I wanted to put a couple of ghost shrimp in with him, but my last betta pestered the ones he shared a tank with. So I nixed that idea

If it's not a good idea, let me know and the snail can go in with the loaches and pleco in the other tank

Oh...and they also had small conical shaped snails that were free. I got two for each tank. They are super tiny and seem to burrow into the gravel. Anyone know if they are ok? If not, they can also be removed. I looked online and didnt find anything on them. From what I've seen...Kita hasnt even noticed them yet :shifty:

Thanks

Hi,
The snail should be fine with the betta, i have kept my bettas with all sorts of inverts and fish without problems, and if you get the right mix of betta and tankmate it can work well.
I dont know the size of your tank but the snail wouldnt contribute enough to the bio load to make any difference really, especially since your tank is filtered and it should be fine. With regards to the shrimp, if you wanted to try again i have found armano shrimp to go well with bettas.

The other snails from your description could be some kind of pond snail, i wouldnt want them but each to their own :) They breed like rabbits and you might just find yourself overrun (if this is what they are, they could be another species, the invert section could help you out a little more)

Thank you. He is in a 3 gal. Eek...i dont want those little suckers mating all over the place. I just thought they were little and cute...thats why I got them haha. I'll keep an eye on them just to make sure they dont go overboard. I'll look into the armano shrimp. I just dont want them getting pestered all the time like the ghosts did

I started off with one or two little snails that hitched into my tank on a plant, 5 years on i have a never ending supply of the things, though im looking into a puffer so they might just come in useful

I just bought two of these snails today, Mamba for Marie's tank, and Adder for Albert's tank.

Mamba is doing great and going to town in Marie's tank. However, Adder isn't doing much at all. He/she was difficult to remove from the bag and I was as slow and gentle as I could be to unstick it from the bag, but is it possible that I hurt it and now that's why it's not doing anything? It's definitely alive...but it was so much more active before I removed it from the bag and put it in the tank. Both were acclimated properly and the water in each tank is fine. Just hope I didn't hurt the little thing :(

Puffers are great for keeping pest snail numbers down, we had 2 figure of 8's but since we got rid of them the snails took over again. My female bettas have started eating them in their tank but the males don't bother with them at all

Enter the crazy snail lady:
watch the mysteries and the betta, some betta will nip at there attenni making life miserable for the little guys, i had to remove mysteries from betta tanks for there own happiness before.
also mystery snails are NOT pest snails and don't need anything to keep there population down. you may see your snails mount each other from time to time but them leaving eggs is obvious, they will lay above the water line. like so

if you don't want baby mysteries just remove and destroy the eggs. also be aware that a three gallon will be probaly two small for a snail that can get to be this size

keep in mind these guys are related to the apple snail so they get big. and like the apple they need a male and female snails to mate and lay eggs, if you have two males or two females you are unlikely to see eggs.
anyways this is all i can think of for the moment if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask, i have sort of become an expert on the little guys. oh here are some useful links.

those all helped me when i started off with the snails any ways good luck and i hope you enjoy having them as much as i enjoy it. :)

Both of my snails are fine. Adder, the one I was afraid was hurt, was just being shy I guess. However, they poop A LOT more than I expected them to. Marie's snail, Mamba, really did a number on the bottom of the tank and made the water stinky. There was so much poop that I couldn't get enough of it vacuumed without draining almost all of the water. So I ended up just doing a full water change and I'm hoping it won't throw it into a new cycle.

Oh well, snailies are now in the bathroom in their own tank to make funky :p

yes just remember everybody poops :p
the more you feed the more they go.

I love snails! When my kids were young they used to have a tank in their bedroom with just snails and pond weed. Much easier than flipping goldfish that kept dying! I now have a colony of snails in my rain water barrel! :shout:

I realize that. I was giving each snail just a little sprinkle from a mashed up algae wafer each day, didn't seem like enough to account for all the poop, when compared to the amount of poop my fish make from the amount of food they eat.
As far as eating leftover fish food, there is none. I only feed my bettas pellets and watch them eat each one.

I dunno...maybe there was a lot of uh, protein buildup or something on the walls of my tanks? Whatever the case, the snails seem content in their new home. And there's already streaks of poop on the walls of their tank :p
