My black mollie has developed a sort of flakey skin growth around it's head and gills. When I bought it the fish was all black but now it seems more grey/silver around the head and gills and the skin seems to be really flakey.

Last week my Dalmation Mollie died after I noticed a cotton wool like growth on it's fin.

Water qualities are ok according to the guy in the aquatic centre.

The two Guppies and ten neons seem fine and although the Mollie has this growth it hasn't really been showing any weird behaviour.

I've isolated the fish in a breeding trap. The tank is a 24x12x12 and is fairly new, around 1 month old. The first fish I put in, the neons are all ok.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks
James :)

Have any more spots appeared on your fish? If so, it's probably ich, which is extremely deadly. You need to find treatment at your pet store, if you asked them for some, they should probably be able to give it to you, try to find one with malachite green in it.You need to take this fish far away from the others, because ich is very contagious. It can be treated so don't despair! If it is not showing symptoms now, it will very soon!

Good luck!

It sounds like more of a true body fungus.

My advice is to get a medication for this. Maroxy by Mardel is a very good one and it is also safe for your biological filter so you would only have to remove the carbon from your filter if you use carbon.

I will look for some pics of this disease and post them so you can let us know if this is what your fishes problem looks like.

also, when treating for ich you will not want to isolate the fish in question that is showing symptons. you will want to treat the whole tank. even though the fish may not show symptons of ich, it has been expsed to it. ich will live in the tank. it is when it finds a host that you see the symptons of it. so treat the whole tank not just the one fish.

bought a fish from an lfs cause it had this white cottony growth on it. was over the whole top of it's head and starting on the eyes. the lfs was not goig to treat him, so i bought him and brought him home. used clout in a hospital tank to treat him for it. also salt. salt is good for treating sick fish as it helps the fish to maintain proper gill function which can become handicapped during illness. when initially using salt add 1 well rounded tablespoon per every five gallons of water. disolve the salt in tank water first. i use a box filter and add the salt to the box and let it cycle through the tank. do 10% water changes daily adding salt only to the amount of new water being added. clout will stain your tank, actually the silicone at the joints. a good reason to have a 10 gallon hospital tank. also cuts down on the amount of meds that you will have to use to treat the fish.

it was a cobalt blue that had this fungus. now he is happily residing in one of the community tanks.
