I have a 25 us gallon tank with no other fish in it, and I was thinking of getting 5 or 6 black kuhli loaches. What do you think? I would like to try to breed them, but I know it has not even really been done before with black kuhlis so... But I had a question about sand or gravel, I heard sand was the best because they like to hide under it, but I has gravel in there right now would they be ok with it, or should I just switch to sand?

IMO, sand is better, but a little of large rounded gravel in a corner of the tank may give them a nice playground.

As for breeding, asaik this has not been accomplished by anyone and the loach.com people are even unsure about the color of their eggs. I strongly suspect that the answer is green (as with Pangio Myersi)...one of my P. Javanicus has a green tint in the right places.

If you really want to try breeding, it probably should be a 1- or 2- species tank (some peaceful dither), and you can certainly put more than 5 or 6 into a 25g.

....

If I may ask: why black and not striped?
One real problem with black khulis is that it is impossible to keep track of them, they all look alike, and the sexual differenciation is minimal. So you would not know who is who, and what are they doing.
