I have a Juvel Vision 180 with 2 femal blue gouarmi, 1 male indian gourami, female bristle nose and 11 x-ray tetra.
I was wondering if I could put either one or both of the above together in my tank?
I did have a small BGK but it wasnt very well when was given to me from a friend and died.

Thanks Emma x

definitely "no" to the BGK; they get to be about 18" and need a 75 USg minimum tank.

ONE elephant nose might be ok, but you'd have to worry about making sure it got fed enough. i'm sure someone else with more experience can give you the details. in the meantime, why not check out the profile in the fish index?

I've never kept an elephantnose, but I have read that they find it hard to compete for food, so my concern would be the bristlenose, greedy little gutbuckets that they are.

Feeding after dark and with quick sinking foods aswell as frozen food will help a Elephant nose eat. The Black Ghost Knife will not be suitable for the tank and I believe elephant noses shouldn't be kept with them anyways due to both having electrical fields ( I think you shouldn't anyway.)

Elephant nose fish are very difficult to look after even for experienced fishkeepers, they tend die a lot- they need live foods (not dead/prepared) and a very soft fine sand substrate;

They're very unique looking fish, but i wouldn't really advise them as even if you do everything right for them, they can still randomly die on you. They're difficult fish to keep alive and healthy in the long time, to get the most success out of them you really need to concentrate on creating the perfect tank set up for them.

if you need to decide between the two go with the black ghost they look realy cool and iv had mine for about 4 months and i got to say their pretty easy to keep alive, mine eats sinking granulets and shrimp pellits hes mabe grown half an inch since i got him and their a trip to watch swim their realy , versitile i guess u could say as a treat i get 1 glow fish and it will be their all day but in the morning it will be gone i guess it eats them at night because it can particularly see them at night i dont know , they also love blood worms and grass shrimp they absolutly tear apart , this is a realy cool and interesting fish but u must keep in mind their spooky for atlest 1 month after getting him hes gunna hide and every time u add a slightly large fish he will return to hiding for atleast a day after about 1 month he will warm up to the area and begine to roam the tankl during the day all around its cooler and to watch it eat grass shrimp is a sight to see they also get along realy well with gouramies and most other community fish the cave like coral i have that he hides in he shares with a pleco about his size and they commute together with no problems theres my story........ the other guys are right though i wouldnt put it in a tank with an elephant nose and u could keep him for a while but of course he will ge to big for the tank after all the average size you buy them at young is mabe 5-7 inches witch is fine but at about 10-14 i will also have to get rid of mine

Aww, I was after something unusal in my tank and it seems that if I get an Elephant Nose it will die and a BGK, they will grow too big.
I just find my tank a little boring with the usual LFS inhabitants in like, tetra and gourami.

beeeeep! wrong answer! :p its just a bad idea to buy a fish that you 100% know will outgrow your tank unless you have an appropriately sized tank already purchased and sitting in your den. stuff happens and plans change--don't make the fish suffer. also, the BGK would outgrow GPQ's tank in a year or less, making such a purchase pointless, really.

GPQ, what do you think about wood shrimp (also called fan shrimp)? i personally love them and wish that i had a nice calm community that would suit one of those. they have a really different look that might be just the thing you're looking for :)

the trouble with most oddballs is that they're generally big, aggressive, tough to feed or a combination of the three. that's why they're "odd" ;) maybe you just are thinking the wrong way about what makes a tank look "different". maybe you would like to add some rainbow fish--check out the threadfins and celebes. or maybe what would make your tank feel unique would be some silver hatchets. also, have you looked at the smaller gudgeons, such as the peacocks?
