Hi All, Norman has been with me for a number of years now, he is my 13inch gorgeous black belt cichlid (Vieja maculicauda), to be honest I have always assumed he was a male as he was to small to sex when we got him and my daughter named him Norman, could anyone confirm that this is the case or do i need to start calling her Norma!

Looks like a male because of the hump.
But then again males have more vivid coloration.
I can't answer this one.

Boy, stunning fish. I don't know about sexing but that is one gorgeous fish. How big is the tank? What are the tankmates? Thanks for sharing a picture.

Yes he/she is gorgeous, it is in my main tank which is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft. actually many would say that I have far to many fish packed into my tank. However, I have more than double the recommended filtration and a pond UV Filter, and I always carry out my weekly water changes.

I tried to purchase females when stocking in an attempt to reduce conflicts and to this day, I have had no problems, tank is stocked as follows:

2 x salvini Cichlids,
1 x golden Bay Snook
2 Green and a gold severum
2 brown acara
1 x blue acara
1 x Gorgeous Rainbow Cichlid
1 x female red jewel Cichlid (though i am monitoring this as my snook grows!)
1 x Bala Shark (Only survivor of 6 juveniles following 2 weeks of serious overfeeding by a neighbour when on holiday a few years back!)
2 x Synodontis polli / ocellifer hybrids
1 x red tail shark still aggressive despite his tankmates!
1 x Albino Pleco and 1 x unidentified black pleco, (he had been dumped in a bucket outside my LFS which had closed early so i took him home as it was a freezing winters night!
1 x Fire Eel, approx 18inch

Yes, I know there are alot of fish in there but the water quality is good, my fish are fed high quality food and are in great condition, there are very few conflicts and I have numerous other tanks in the event of any issues, I will post some photos later this week.

they are approx 5or7 inches at the moment

that should say 6 to 7 inches, they have just been fed hence the debris!

Wow nice tank and fish :D

The Black Belt is gorgeous!! 100% male, females dont get that big and the headshape is male :)

Stocking is a little off but on the most looks good, I would just be warey of the Jewel as they can do a lot of damage. Interesting to see a Black Belt behaving as well as a lot are quite bad.... one of my favorites atm Black Belts :) But that said since you are talking in terms of years with these fish it must be working :)

Also your Port Acara, not 100% its a Port Acara it looks like its some kind of Aequidens - do you have any other pics?

The Jewel is a female, approx 3 yrs old, she is good as gold, especially now the others are bigger than her, she has her own den that is her safe haven.

I think you are correct, I was given the latin name of Aequidens Portalegrensis? which when I have just googled comes up as a brown Acara, the LFS has now thankfully closed, at the time I was not that familiar with cichlids and they were also selling Jewels as community fish! the 1st 2 I owned had to be returned as they were so aggressive.

Incidentally, the acara were sold as 2 females, would you agree?

Yeah they are not Port Acaras - the Acara group is going under quite a lot of change atm with the big group being split into two. But Port Acaras have always been separate and reasonably undescribed - a while ago all Cichlids were grouped in a group called Cichlasoma but over the years they have become split and recognised as much more diverse groups and rightly so! So thats how they all got their scientific names however the Port Acara group has never been given a family name and are still known as Cichliasoma Portalegensis (spelling) and there are a few others in the group - however one of the characteristics of the family is a dark band on the Lateral Line which runs down the length of the body. And yours have a Lateral Line spot that is edged with white markings and the same on the caudiel pinnacle (near the tail). So I would guess either Aequidens Tetramerus, Aequidens sp.Peru.

I would guess Aequidens sp.Peru but only because the cheek markings are faint on both of them which edges it over A. Tetramerus for me... have a google and see what you think.

I think you have a male and a female rather than 2 females the top pic is male and the second is female. The pointy dorsal and anal fin is the give away for these two.

I second the motion for full tank shots! How about a set of pics in the members pics section?
