Biting Betta

Ok. I go armpit deep to clean. I'm on the shorter side and don't know how I'd siphon or reach anything otherwise. I'm about to invest in those gloves that go up to your armpit.

You can get one of this siphon.
Most siphon should be able to reach the bottom of the tank unless your tank is very tall(more than 2 ft) or you have a very wide(front to back) tank.

You can also modify it by getting a longer plastic hose (the part which I circled) if
your tank is too tall and wide.

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't seen one with the hard plastic hose part. Mine is just the wide mouth end and rubber hose. I like the idea of this one. I just figured you reach on in to clean it and then wash your arm after. The video mentioned you can even get the fish tb from tap water. Opening all sorts of new fears for me today.

Don't worry.
I don't think it can spread so easily through tap water.

According to the doctor in the video(from his posted comment), he had only encountered 3 cases during his many years of seeing patients.

It spread mostly through an infected fish.
Just make sure your hands don't have any open wound and wear glove for protection.

Very interesting and kinda funny thread... Bettas being bullies... Their betta at bullying lol

I forgot to mention this.
Usually my arms won't go inside the tank unless I want to wipe the glass.
But with the water at low level, my arms won't be touching the water.
Only my hands that will go inside the water if I need to wipe the bottom of the tank(for tank with bare bottom).

I thought it wasn't good to do large water changes. I've only been removing about 20-25% a week so the sudden water change doesn't cause more stress on their bodies.

"I have dealt with 1200 lbs livestock and feathered dinosaurs."

Something like Deinonychus antirrhopus?

Get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q3S9LR2/?tag=ff0d01-20

Large water changes, done properly, never hurt, and are usually more beneficial than smaller ones, depending on the tank and stocking

I had never read the scientific name, but the resemblance to the Google search was uncanny. I'd bet half of my siblings' wealth i had a flock of those.

I will definitely look into a new siphon and consider some larger water changes.

Nay, nay. I will just take your word for it. I feel like I'll just make a new, unreasonable fear for myself haha I'll stick with the mellow fish like corydoras or otocinclus.
Cory can be a tad spiteful too sometimes.....

Several years ago I had too many Cories and a then local aquatic shop used to buy batches from me. Once or twice I got stabbed by a Cory fin spine.....obviously ticked off at me trying to catch it. A squirming cactus fish, which at the time was quite a surprise since they always look so cute and cuddly.

The thought you had about your freckles being misidentified as food doesn't seem that far fetched tbh...or she might just be planting love bites on you.....who knows what goes through the mind of a fish when you dare invade its territorial space......I mean, anyone would think that fish owned the aquarium that you so carefully chose and scaped for them, heaven forbid that you might want to some basic maintenance in there

I'm going to go ahead and assume a cactus stab is worse than a little betta pinch.
I don't know much about the fight, flight, etc of fish, but I don't feel the love haha.
I can read the room usually, but I'm not reading the tank 🤣

Fish have body language all their own

Betta are easy to read if you spot the signs......especially the heavy finned males when in a community setting. The curling of tail and finnage around food to stop tankmates eating, the snapping back as another fish swims quietly by but too close, the way that after a while tankmates get nipped and pushed around, and how tankmates cower as far away as they can from the Betta and often turn their back on it when it swims by.

Watching the fish you can often pick up behavioural traits of your fish, how different individuals react to you and each other. Fish can be quite fascinating...if a little painful at times when they decide your flesh is better than the food you are serving them ;)

Bettas have poor vision except really in close, as befits a creature that waits underwater for mosquitoes to land. Sometimes they get confused.
Sometimes when you buy females, you get short finned males. Males are quite territorial.

I had a Betta that used to swim into my cupped hand when I was a teenager. I could lift him out, though I only did that once. Maybe the fish is kissing you, but seriously lacks understanding of the concept or basic social skills...

Or, she thinks your arm is a dragon and she wants to protect her society/sorority from such threats.
