Howdy,
I would like to know if 1 male betta would be happy in this type of set up? Would there be to much water movement? It would be 8 USgal. Would it have to cycle? There appears to have no heating source would the light provide enought heat? Would this create a reflection problem? I think I covered most of my questions but would like to hear your thoughts and advice.
Thanks

As long as your room doesn't drop below 75 degrees often, no heating is necessary. No cycling - Unlees it has a GOOD filtration system, which I doubt, it will need to have weekly water changes (95%-100%), so cycling is pointless. Just make sure you always treat the new water for chlorine. I also always add blackWater Extract to all my tap water. Reflection is unlikely to cause a problem. I think it would be just fine for 1 male betta, but since i can't actually SEE it, no guarentee. Sounds alright though.

This would be going in my new computer room on my desk. As I don't want to move my 10 gal. What is blackwater extract?

I think one betta would be wonderfully happy with that much tank room. Make sure the filter doesn't cause too much current, and if so, figure out a way to cut it back a bit. I would cycle the tank. Eight gallons is a lot of water to change out 100% weekly. Cycling is quick and easy with a fishless cycle, and it saved the fish from being harmed or killed during the cycling process. If your room stays above 75 degrees or so, you won't need a heater. If not, then you'll need one. The problem with using a light to heat the tank is that the fish needs 'dark time' to rest just like we do. Also, when you cut the light off, the tank temperature would drop, and you don't want big flucuations in tank temperature if you can help it.

I have a community biorb.

How big is the desk cause thay are a lot bigger and heavier than they look!

They would be great for a betta. Filtration is amazing and i only have to do the normal weekly water changes. Never had a fish die on me yet.

You can get many accessories and i'm saving up for one of the LED lights that changes though the day from dim in the morning to birght in the afternoon to moonlight in the evening!

Surface current is minimal.

Blackwater extract is a type of water softener often used by breeders. Not a dechlorinator.
