Hiya All,

At the moment all i have in my fluval for my nano is polyfilters and some Ceramic biological large sufurface area. My dad the worrier and old marine tank veteran was wondering if i needed more filter media or would my 6 peices of highly dence LR be enough? Togther with the fluval and the powerhead i have 30gallons per hour turn over, For a 14.5 gallon tank (not taking out for water displacement).

everything is 0. But as soon as i start putting live stock in EG, corals and fish and clean up crew. I may need the extra surface area to clean to digest non-eaten food and waste in the tank.

I was thinking of filling it with active carbon, and bioballs plus the polyfilter it should be quite a good tank water purifier.

Any suggestions welcome!

I would suggest only using LiveRock

Water purifier - what is this for - are you not using RO Water

Get a skimmer, filters are optional since the L.R does most filtration in a marine tank :good:

Thanks guys,

The fluval im using a big external filter whitch gives me 1. Flow 2. Filtration 3. Using the polyfilter it takes out harmful toxins.

All i was asking was if i have sufficient surface area for benerficial bacteria. But obviously the rock will do "most" and the fluval will pick up the rest..

Thanks!

are you gonna have more turnover than 30gph or is that just the fluval?
sorry if its me being an idiot and missing some piece of info

No its the combined generated turnover rate from the fluval and the powerhead.

120lts is about 30gallons.. the fluval turns over 60 and so does the powerhead.

the fluval turns over 60 and so does the powerhead.

So its total combined turnover (all pieces of equipment moving water for now) is 60gph, or is that a total of 120gph with both? With a total of 60gph you have 4.13x turnover. Not enough. If you have 120gph, your going to have 8.27X turnover. Not enough. Youll need 20-30x turnover, so id suggest you buy a small powerhead, which might equate to around 300-400gph.

Liverock should be as light as possible, you dont want dense LR. Dense LR could hold less surface area for anearobic bacteria to help cycle wastes. Next time your buying some LR try and buy the lightest stuff you can! :good: 6 pieces doesnt give a real good annotation of how much you have, because size varies. The normal estimate is done by Kilos. Do you know how much in Kilos you have (or pounds)?

Lmao Im a complete Doofuss..

I had before this post a 1. Powerhead Maxijet 400 whicth is 400lt P/H
2. Fluval 204 Media filter acting as a sump
whitch delivers 604lts per hour.

I now have another Maxijet 400..

So my total turn over is 1404lts per hour. Thats between 20-30 times flow.

My Rock is fairly big and weighs basicly nothing to me. I spent £40 on the LR £5 per lb so i have 8lbs of LR in my tank. In the Filter/sump i have a polyfilter. And some ceramic things (cant remember what their called.
I'll fill the other compartment with activated Carbon and where the sponges used to be some bioballs.

Would this now be enough or do i need some more LR my tank is 60lts/14.5 gallons.

Thats a little low on the LR side of things, might not hurt to add a few extra pounds. Anyway you can take a pic of the tank?
