i was looking into getting the protein skimmer made for the biocube and am just wondering if anyone has any experience with them or know if they are any good or worth the 40 bucks...ive been reading around but cant really seem to find a direct answer.

How big is the Biocube? From everything Ive read, nobody has found the small, cheap skimmers to be worth anything. The have tons of problems, usually bubbles everywhere and total lack of skimmate. If you can fit it, TMC V2, AquaC remora, Deltec and Tunze are commonly used skimmers by people on this forum seem to have good luck with. I have the Tunze nano skimmer and love it.

i have a 29 gallon biocube..thanks i will check into those.

im sure the euro-reef (when it comes out) will be on the list for the best nano skimmers. So you could wait for that if you want (if your located in the US)

Euro-reef is starting to go down in popularity in my area so im guessing their skimmers arent top of the line anymore. People say that there are way better brands that can handle the same amount of load for a lot cheaper. Ill try to find out tomorrow which ones they are. Ive heard really good things about the tunze nano skimmers though, but ive heard that you had to modify the biocube for it to fit.

Octopuses are starting to put euro-reef off the shelves, as well as ASM. But both are just euro-reef copycats (no really, im not being mean or anything, they are) that are sold for a lot less. Well actually, the new octopuses arent copying euro-reef anymore, they are copying aqua-euro which is basically a copy of tunze.

Seeing that octopus's nano skimmer is a copy of the CPR backpack (which isnt a very good skimmer), aqua-euro doesnt have a nano skimmer, and ASM's nano skimmer requires a sump.... I think euro-reef would be able to sell their product well without as much competition from its copying brands. Euro-reef still have KICK A** skimmers, i can vouch that. Most brands are just copycats though, every single one is a copy in fact, Euro-reef and Deltec were the first to introduce needlewheel skimmers, so you could say that they are not copycats, but, needle-wheel was derived from venturi, and somewhere along the line, someone invented venturi, so Euro-reef and Deltec copied that person who created venturi skimmers, so on and so forth. AquaC's technology was based on becket styled skimmers, so theirs isnt 100% original.

Well, the thing is everything has a duplicate now. Thats just part of business, if you make something that works really well, someone is bound to copy it. Hell, if they make it better and sell it for cheaper, the business is dead. That is whats happening to euro-reef.

Euro-reef also has bad customer service so they are losing out more on that. They told my boss that they were going to send a new needlewheel out a specific day. He called in a week later and he found out that they were just about to ship it out, so he just canceled and said f them and ordered a few reef octopuses that arrived a few days later. Hes never recommended a euroreef over a reef octopus again after that.

Theres no point of buying the "original" things anymore just because they are supposed to be the best brand. Nowaday the imitators are outperforming the originals.

Oh yeah, giovanni venturi invented the venturi :p

I doubt that will be happening anymore since Reef Octopus's new models are riddled with bad reviews, albeit a lot cheaper, they suck. The extreme Octopuses copy a completely different skimmer now anyway. They are making the exact same thing as the MSX extreme skimmers, which copy i think ATB....

I don't know if you thought of this, but possibly, the reason why your boss doesn't recommend a Euro-Reef anymore is because he doesn't sell them. Think capitalism, he probably doesn't care about anything else except money (like all business owners).

And technically, put 2 similar models side to side with no mods, and work them, the Euro-reef should out perform. But since the octopuses are cheaper, you can get a larger model for the same price. Thats when the company starts to "die."

And you forgot about build quality too, what are they made out of, extruded clear PVC, or Cast Acrylic, ones cheaper than the other, the other is stronger.

In the end the most important aspect of any skimmer is the pump. Sedra (the stock pump that comes with Euro-Reef) aren't that good. If you go to their forum, they recommend eheims for maximum performance. I do not know if Octopus even has its own forums or even listens to customers at all.... Give me some air intake, sound and wattage specs on the octopus pump and i can compare it with the Sedras, GenX, and Eheim (the most common Euro-Reef pumps).

Euro-Reef's skimmers are also old, they know that, and they testing new models, like the nano skimmer, and the Extreme Cone Skimmer.

Well, he had both euro reef and reef octopus. 4 of the tanks had euroreef skimmers, now theres only the one left that didnt break down yet. Im not sure how the newer octopuses are so I dont have any input on those, but I know that the euroreef imitations seem to work just as well as the original. If the skimmer is just sitting in the sump, the materials it is made out of isnt really a big issue for a lot of people. I will have to see the newer euroreefs in action to see if they are still worth the money though.

Let me see some comparisons. Imitations work, but never as good as the original, in at least one aspect. Let me get some air specs on the OTB pumps.

Anyway, here are the new octopus's, an obvious imitation of the AquaEuro skimmers, which are a less obvious imitation of the Tunze DOC skimmers.

Well, I dont really have any like text comparisons, but the results I see at work are pretty similar. Well, the bottom line is that you should buy skimmers that you know work. You shouldnt buy the skimmer because of the brand.

Back to the original question :p: The biocube skimmers should work, but I dont think they are worth the money.
