Hello ppl

I got a 27 gallon tank afew days ago nearly a meter long by 37cm tall. I havent even got any gravel or anything yet for it so after cycling we're still probably talking after christmas befor fish get added.

I was planning 2 (maybe 3) koi a small tench and maybe some other small lively fish (small orfe or golden minnows)

when the fish get too large they can go into my koi pond and a can buy replacements but how big can i let say the 2 koi get befor i release them, i was thinking about 5-6" each? im planning on getting all the fish at about 2".

Dont put koi into a tank. This stresses them and being in such a small amount of water they wont be able to grow as fast as they should.
Koi dont like being viewed from the side and need a huge amount of water volume for their size as they excrete more waste than goldfish.
250 gallons is needed for a decent sized adult so 50 gallons for young fish.
I wouldnt put anything other than minnows in the tank.

not Any thing larger than minnows in a 27 gallon tank!

The koi will only be grown in the tank for abit until they are realeases into a pond

He doesnt want fancies, just the koi.
If they are to go in a pond eventually then why not wait until the spring to get them and place straight into a pond?
Seems a bit risky to buy them now, have to do lots of work to keep them alive and possibly even stunt them.

Yeah fancies arent really my thing, but on that point that was what i was going on really. Near 30 Gallon is enuf for 2 goldfish so assumed it would be ok for 2 koi (both carp like fish) if i released them when they got to medium goldfish size. If they only grew too 4-5" long in a metre long tank i thought that would be sufficient room not to stunt them as there carp and so very hardy fish aswell.
However if you think not, il respect that opinion as you no alot more that me on fishkeeping.

Right, formulating a plan B in my head now.

Just to clarify, is it not ok to keep species in an aquarium that will outgrow that aquarium even if you have somehwere bigger (pond) to release them too when they start getting to large?
I just assumed that if its healthy to keep a fish that grows to 4" in a tank of a certain size then it would be ok to keep a species that grew aloy larger in that tank, aslong as it was rehomed when it reached anymore than 4". if im wrong thats fine.
is it different from species too species?

Thanks alot for your help aswell :good:

I wouldnt have said yes to keeping common goldfish in that size tank, maybe 1 at a push for a couple of months..
Koi can reach 3 feet in length so I dont see the point of them in a tank for a few months unless it was at least 75 gallons and the koi small.
Also the volume of waste produced is a lot more than goldfish, so if you had those fish in the tank then you would be doing water changes twice or even more a day.
You would also need a huge external filter.

Of course I cant tell you what to do only advise you, so if you went ahead with it then thats your choice.

Ive but the idea of small koi on the back burner for now then.

its only just occured to me why tropical fish are so popular, there good looking and there are 100's of species that are small. Its more difficult to find small cold freshwater species.
Does anyone want to hazard a guess at this question still

"is it not ok to keep species in an aquarium that will outgrow that aquarium even if you have somehwere bigger (pond) to release them too when they start getting to large"

Im still figuring it out but im sure il find a plan thats pleasing for both me and the fish ( species unknown yet) :p

i dont think we can get sunfish over here in the uk or they are rare.
