Hi everyone, I was looking at Bichirs recently and I think they're really cute but I would like to know more about them from someone who has had first hand experience with them. I would probably not be able to get one anytime soon since, from what I know, they get fairly huge lol But I just generally would like to know a little bit about their personalities and what size certain types get to. Thanks! :)

I've had a senegal bichir for about 4 years now and an armored bichir for about 2 days :p They are very clumsy fish that (in my own experience) are more often than not hiding. They can and will eat any fish that will fit in their mouths. They can be hard to feed with other fish in the tank, my bichirs have always been the last to get to food; they rely heavily on their sense of smell to find it and aren't too good at immediately darting to it. Senegals get to about a foot long and would require about a 55g tank, I believe the P. delhezi I have will get to about a foot and a half; he's in a 75g. Overall they are very interesting fish, hardy too. They gulp air from the surface and are very forgiving about water chemistry (I'm not suggesting that you test this though ;) )

They are very cool looking and fun to keep; I'm sure someone else will give you far more in depth advise soon, hope mine helped :p

I agree they are adorable  i named the senegal bichir cuddles... he has a really adorable face...and the dinosaur like spines on his back make the name quite ironic XD

lol Thanks for the advice, they sound really cute, although I'm probably going to have to wait to get anything that big until I've got my own house :p My plan is to get a very large aquarium and probably put an Oscar, Zebra Shovelnose Catfish, and Bichir in it, but that'll be in a couple of years  Also, which type of Bichir is the smallest?

The following get to around the foot mark

Delhezi
mokelembembe
Senegal
ansorgii
retropinnis
and the 3 palmas sub species

As for information what would you like to know?

The larger Lower Jaw species require 6x2x2 minimum ideally something 3 foot wide
Smaller Lower Jaw species a 4x2x2 minimum

Larger upper jaw species
Ornate / weeksii / teugelsi require 4x2x2

The other smaller upper jaw would fit in a 75g Possibly anything down to 40g providing it 48lx15dx12h

That's a lot of good information, thank you! :) Also, why do the larger lower jaw species require a wider tank then the larger upper jaw species? And originally I had been looking for information on their personalities and just some stories of some quirky things their own Bichirs have done, and some cute things and stories, etc. But anything works, really. I'm open to any information you can give me lol

The main difference with the lower jaw species (apart from the lawer jaw protruding the upper)is they are larger , the largest (polypterus endlicheri congious)getting to a max of 39inch(although not common but it will get to at least 30inch if fed correctly) .
Other lower jaw's that can get over the 24" inch mark are endlicheri endlicheri , bichir bichir and ansorgii.
The largest upper jaw species is between the ornate and weeksii which will hit the 20inch mark with the ornate getting up to 24inch but that'll take ages.

They live a long time ( easily older than 10 -15 years)and will take a long time to get fully grown so alot of people keep them in 4x2x2 - 6x2x2.

As for personallity if you want something active then go for either Delhezi one of the palmas species or a senegal. Although each fish is differnt! They're generally nocturnal especially the larger one's so cave's or pipes are needed to give them somewhere to rest if you plan on having tank mates.

I love mine to bit's totally class fish , mine taste most fish i put in there, when i put my oscar and weeksii in my main tank first the weeksii bit the oscar and then left it alone, most liekly just seing if it's edible.

If you want any diet information check out some of beblondie's post's she's got all the information you could possible need :)
