Sorry to sort of double post this thread:-

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=90897

I've got a ram that seems to have ich, I've been advised to raise temperature to 30oC and turn lights off and put blanket over tank.

Also the suggestion was made to put salt in water but I'm concerned as I'm sure I read somewhere that BGK's shouldn't have salt in their water when being medicated.

Advice on the BGK issue would be really helpful as I need to treat now (on holiday in 2 days!!!) :/

I'm afraid I cant answer your answer, but I recommend you read this post

My BGK stabbed himself

On the second page there's a lot of stuff going on about being careful when treating them because they seem to be quite sensitive. If this thread doesnt answer in time, I recommend PMing BlueIce about it. I'm quite sure she'll be able to help you :)

--Edit--

Edited to wish you good luck getting all your fish back into good health and wishing you a happy holiday :)

with your current fish you cannot use salt in your tank in any shape or form.

your catfish will react very badly to it and the BGK.

i have successfully treated for ICH in a tank with BGK by using interpet No. 6 on a half dose and raising the temp to about 83

Thanks Paul

It turns out I have some interpet no 6 with the tank - as it was 2nd hand but is it still ok to use?

I've blacked out the tank (from previous advice) - would you recommend I still black it out and leave the light off or just leave the light off?

Thanks again!!! Let's hope there are no other casualties! :-(

Blacking out is not absolutely necessary, all it does is stop the chemical treatment from reacting to the light. They react to sunlight and become less effective. The darkening of the tank is thought to have absolutley no effect on the parasite as it is not photo-receptive and is not even thought to have anything that resembles eyes to register light with.

It can be hard reading but the Skeptical Aquarist has some of the best advice on treating Ich. Remember, once the Ich is in, just cos you can't see it, don't mean it's not there. Make sure you have enough medication to break the cycle.

Best of luck :kana: :flex:
