Better To Use Laterite Or Just Use Liquid Fertilizer

I am about 2 hours from putting sand in my new tank 15 G with 24w T5 light I am going to use it to try breeding livebearers I want to have some nice plants in there with a sand base but nothing to hard to grow do I put a layer of laterite down then sand on top or will it be okay or better to use ferts either tablet or liquid form. Also if I use laterite can i mix the sand with it or does it need to be done in layers? The sand is just really cheap argos play sand.

IF you only have laterite, layer it under the sand. Better than nothing I guess, but not brilliant IMO.

Better use EcoComplete or Tetra plant substrate.....
