I have my Betta, Sam, in a 5 Gal acrylic bowfront tank by himself (well I put 2 ghost shrimp in a few weeks ago but haven't seen them in a while). The tank came with a 'Whisper Micro Filter'. The entire filter sits inside the tank, underwater. The way it's in there now it doesn't really break up the surface at all.

question:
Does the plant need the surface of the water broken up so the water can refresh itself with gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide, whatever else)?

What kind of plant is it? If it is fake, it doesn't need anything. ;)

I keep low-light, hardy plants like java fern in my betta bowls and in their tanks that don't have filters. I change their water pretty frequently and all of their plants are doing fine.

Fake plants... sheeesh...lol

One is an onion plant and the other is a... yea... one of those... it has a reddish stalk with green oval shaped leaves... and there is bamboo in it too but that's been in with him for years...

The plants have been in with him for a couple months now and are slowly going downhill. I just put a new fluorescent light on the tank and plan to get some plant fertilizer soon... also because of the way they are going down hill (leaves turning yellow then eventually clear but stems and roots doing great) someone suggested I use liquid fertilizer with iron in it...

Any input welcome...

:p Oh, well I have no idea then. I can only keep java fern alive. Hopefully someone will come by and be able to help. Maybe you should ask in the plant section. :dunno:
