ok, so i'm definately gonna get a betta, in a 5 gal. tank, but what can i put with it for an extra little something to look at  (obviously the betta will be the main focal point... so to speak  ). is there some kind of small fish that could live there, or maybe a snail??

thanks

A large apple snail would be good. My male betta and my golden inca snail are best buddies and snails are really interesting creatures to. As for fish, White Cloud Mountain Minnows would be a good choice. They are not fin nippers, they only get to be around 1.25" and they tolerate a wide range of temperatures from 65 degrees to 80 degrees. They are very peaceful and easy to keep. Good Luck! :)

People say cories, female swordtails, female guppies, female platies, female mollies all get along with bettas. But it also depends on your fish--some bettas just don't like anyone else in their space. And don't overcrowd in a 5 gallon tank. A snail would probably be okay although if it's small, your betta may kill it (and eat it--our bettas see snails as escargot, they also love eating live grass/ghost/amano shrimp).

For an unheated tank I'd definitely go for white cloud mountain minnows or rosy minnows as other fish may not cope so well with the cooler temperature.
