I want to get a betta but I am pretty sure that the fish in my community tank would like its fins too much. Can bettas be happy in 0.5-1 gallon bowls? I have seen them in bowls but don't know if they could be happy like that.

I do water changes on my tanks almost constantly (as my girlfriend and water soaked rug can confirm). How do you do water changes on a betta in a bowl? What do you do about ammonia and nitrite? I know about fish keeping but not this aspect of it.

This is just my personal opinion here, but I would not recommend any type of bowl for a betta. I'm not a big fan of the 1 gallon tanks either, mostly for the reason that they are too difficult too keep a constant temperature at. It's worth the investment to go with a tank big enough that you can put a heater and a filter with.

I don't hate anyone keeping a betta in a small bowl, etc, etc. That's a personal choice to keep them that way and I'll respect that. I will encourage people to get a bigger tank though, hehe. I'm even encouraging myself to get a bigger tanks for my bettas :fun:

When I had my betta in an unfiltered tank, it was a pain. I did daily water changes but the water always had a nasty greasy film on the top. My betta didn't seem particularly unhappy, but he wasn't very active. I recently put in in a 2 gallon Eclipse Explorer (about 30 bucks) and he LOVES it. He darts around all day and builds HUGE bubblenests. The water always looks clear and I only have to do changes once a week! :D :) :D

My neighbor keeps her betta in a 1 gallon Aquascene (from Walmart) and it seems very happy. I was thinking about getting one for my female who is currently in a half gallon. I think they're only $10. My other bettas are in 2.5 gallons from Petsmart ($10) with Azoo Palm filters from drfostersmith.com. I got the 2 filters for $20 including shipping. They're really nice.

I keep mine in an aquascene which is only 1gal. Took out the filter (if you can call it that) and added a real plant. I prefer these little tanks because they have a light which warms the water during the day. Also I prefer tanks whatever size they are because they have lids. Betta's have been known to try out for the high jump olympics and the lid prevents them from being found on the floor or counter the next day looking like a fish cracker.

To keep my betta warmer during the night, I wrap a nice towel around the tank (making sure not to block the air hole on the lid). It's not a perfect solution, but that's the best I can do and it helps a bit.
