Bettas & Goldfish

Hi, Does anyone know if you can have a Betta in a 29 gallon tank with fancy goldfish? My Betta has never shown aggression toward me, so I was thinking he may be ok.

The short answer is no, one is a tropical fish the other is a coldwater fish.

How many goldfish do you have in the tank and what temp is it set at.

Alot of people don't like mixing trop and coldwater, but if the coldwater isn't overstocked and has a heater it's up to you at the end of the day.

also, just cos a fish isnt aggressive towards you, doesnt mean it wont be aggressive to its tankmates.

This is a definate no.

Anything with long flowy tails will be a target for your betta. I strongly suggest you don't mix them.

Ok, thank you for all the replies. I have the Betta in the 29 gallon right now. The temp is set at 72. I haven't put any other fish in there yet. I wanted to ask first. I will take the Betta back out and put him in his little tank. I thought he would be happier with more space, but it seems like he's not. He isn't eating.

Yeah, more space isn't necessarily great for male bettas. They will feel obligated to patrol the whole of it's space to ensure that nothing is coming in to threaten its territory.

I've got a 2.5 gallon, that I still think is too big for my bettas, so I'm going to heavily plant it and put one of my more colorful babies in there.

Remember, these fish originiated in murky/shallow waters and weren't designed to have wide open spaces to swim around it.
