I have a 10g tank with three fancy guppies and three platies. I have three female bettas and three male bettas. One male and female are rather old so do not consider them for this but I want to put a betta in the main tank. Is this possible? Ive kept bettas and have had my experiance with breeding them and i have kept tropicals for a while. But i have never thought of putting them together.

You may well have trouble with bettas and guppies as the flowing tails fool the betta and can cause issues. I have my male betta in the community and have had no issues with tail biting etc but all other fish are short finned.

I agree, most bettas will go after the long flowing tail of a fancy guppy because it can looks like another Betta. I also have never had any problems with my Betta and other fish, but the fish I put him with we're short finned and not active, like zipping around the tank

And vice versa. I have seen guppies attack bettas fins

I have just put my Betta in the same tank with 4 Guppies (2 yellow and 2 blue) and 4 red Platties.
No nipping etc.
When the guppies get a little too close my Betta flares up, but the Guppy gets away sharpish!! There is no chasing etc though, and most of the time they move past each other perfectly fine.
It all depends on the personality of your Betta - some will get along with guppies fine, whereas others will not.

How long have they been in the tank together?

there won't be any issues if he's just gone in, bettas take a few weeks to settle then they turn, personally i'd seperate now if you can

I've had my betta in with my guppies, I have 3 bettas, 2 of them killed 2 of my guppies, the third however is just leaving them alone, I also have platies in with them, so I guess it just depends on the betta and his temperament.

I have kept Bettas in with platys but personally I think the activity of a tropical community adds stress to the betta. The betta ended up with Ich while in the community. I removed him and treated both tanks. The betta is doing well, but I feel that a community lifestyle was too much for him.

I do not recommend them for community living, but there are some easy going laid back bettas that can handle it. I would however, stay away from crowntails, and king bettas as candidates for a community, as they tend to be more aggresives than veiltails and halfmoons.

Totally agree with you there! I've never heard of a king betta before! What do they look like?

They are larger and have much shorter tails but they can hav very pretty colors. I have seen some giant ones.

I think i'm just going to leave them be. Thank you everyone for the replies!

Whats to stop you from keeping a betta? A 3g betta tank sits nicely on a nightstand next to your bed :p Mine dances for me at bedtime

I've some experience with a male betta in a community tank with guppies...it didn't end well. I saw a CT betta in with guppies at a LFS and thought, "Fantastic, I'm going to put him in my community tank, this is the best idea EVER!" It was, for about 3 weeks. After that, I woke up to a guppy missing a large part of his lovely tail. I set about making arrangements for a new tank for the betta, but he actually killed another guppy before I could move him over. He now lives alone. I won't attempt it again.
