Today I moved my betta from a 1 gal to a 5 gal. The 5 gal has a over the side filter, which i thought I would use since i have a spounge for that filter. However, I saw the betta's tale getting sucked into the filter, and him struggling to get away from it, so I quickly turned it off. Is there a way I can modify that filter so he can be in a cycled tank?

On the flip side, he LOVES the tank. He spent the first hour in there flaring at the background. He seems active and curious, which I am really happy about because last time I tried him in this tank he started to play dead.

Is the filter adjustable? I'm guessing not... try wrapping something around the filter intake. Like a piece of cheesecloth or something like that. I know there's a better way, but heck if I can seem to find the thread about it right now.

You can snip off a piece of filter sponge and stuff it in the intake tube to reduce incurrent, and you can use this method to cut down outcurrent... it works great for me! :)
