hello im building a betta cube of glass and sealant. It was originally going to be 8"x8"x8", but if I made it 10x10x10, which is roughly 4.33 or 4 1/3 gallons, could I have a single male betta, three ADFs, and a few ghost shrimp?

Can anyone recommend how often I should do water changes in such a tank? What size heater?

Thanks!

again... the betta may or may not go along with the other fishes... so... it's up to you. You could try it out at first, but if the betta and the other fish are flaring up at each other and chasing each other, I would seperate them. Don't use those floating breeding nets.. becase bettas can jump over them.

EDIT: and also, it may be too crowded and if you put a lot of rocks, plants and decor in there, it will get really stressful!

It's possible your Betta may nip at your frogs, but I doubt he will. Most of mine have been quite gentle with my frogs, and will actually let the frogs hitch a ride around the tank (yeah, like the Betta has a choice....). Expect some of the ghost shrimp to go missing, though, if he gets hungry.

I'd go with a 25-50 watt heater. I'd be more inclined towards the 25, since the tank won't QUITE be a 5 gallon tank, but a 50 would probably last longer.

As for water changes, do a daily or every other day spot check to make sure there's no uneaten food (though with ghost shrimp, there probably will never be anything left uneaten long) and waste. It should be good to do a 50% water change with a good siphoning and waste cleanup about once a week, with a good, thorough 100% water change once every two weeks. More if it becomes necessary.

Just watch the frogs, especially during the 100% water changes. I've found the best method to catch them is with a net, and then clasp your hand over the net the very second it leaves the water, and have a small cup or bowl with a secure lid waiting for each individual frog.

I'd perhaps add the betta last. If he goes in first, he'll get used to being alone and mark the entire cube as his territory. then get really aggessive to anything else.

My brute killed one of my ADF.
at first he was ok with it, for a few days anyways.
I came home from work one day to see my beta chewing on my frog like a dog on abone.
I tried to save my dwarf, but just hours later he succumbed to his injuries.
i'll never try that again.
