Hi again,

I am very confused!

Bubbles had some white stringy, cottony like stuff on the top of his head the other day - I did a 100% water change and added some anti-fungus drops to the water & aquarium salt.

The white cottony stuff was gone within 12 hours, but it came back (just a bit) within another 12 hours.

Now he seems to have red marks in front of his gills (they actually kinda look like a second set of gills).

Does this sound like columnaris or is it fungal?

I went to the lfs and they do not carry any antibiotic treatments for fish (illegal in Canada). The only product they had that said it treated bacterial infection was Bettafix.

He is still in the fungus-treated water for now.

My question is should I add bettafix to the water? Should I change it out first? If I do follow the instructions it sais to add 1/2 tsp per gallon (so I would add 3/4 tsp) daily for 7 days without changing the water: does this make sense to you?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Cynthia

I dont have a anwer for you about using bettafix but I would like to know what exactly bettafix is used for?

I am also confused with you saying "antibiotic treatments for fish is illegal is Canada" I live in Canada and there are medications for fish... Im confused...

Well I asked the lfs about tetracycline and they said it was illegal to sell it in fish stores - that the only way I could purchase it was with a prescription from the vet  !

Basically the only treatment my lfs (all 3) seem to carry is ich treatment, fungus treatment or that blue stuff (can't remember the name right now).

And to quote the bottle bettafix is for "bacterial or fungal disease, such as red ulcers, frayed or torn fins, slimy patches or cottony growths ... also used to help heal open wounds and tissue damage".

Do you live near a big als? Because the big als by me sells Tetracycline or at least they did acouple months back. You may want to try there. I know theres a big als in Montreal. Here is the phone # - 514-428-0099
Good luck :)

I believe betta fix is diluted melafix. Use 1/5 of a dose of melafix for torn fins and such. It should save some money anyway.
