bettafix, melafix, or salt?

Bettafix: never worked. My betta has lost most of its fins. :/
Melafix: it was suggested that I not use it because it was too strong for a bowl
Salt: have no clue if it did anything

So, from experience, I would say that my fish suffers from bacterial finrot and that it does not apply in your case. However, it just might be that these meds don't work, as some people believe. :dunno:

None of that worked, my betta was in pretty bad shape. I believe Melafix is nothing more than tea tree oil.

Check www.bettatalk.com for her recommendations. I couldn't find the Neosulfex but used Trisulfa and it worked wonders in conjunction with Jungle Fungus Eliminator! His fins are beautiful and fuller than they have ever been! Good luck.

Will never ever use bettafix or melafix.

Melafix is too touchy as far as dosing goes, so I won't use it.

Salt is a wonderful thing for soothing and healing. Otherwise I dont' bother.
Most problems that either of those things would fix can be fixed with good clean water and stresscoat, or if it warrants being medicated, I'll go for something a tad bit stronger.

I use an eye dropper and put in one drop melafix, one drop pima fix and a pinch of salt per gallon when treating bettas. I have had success with this dosage. Good luck! (ps make sure to rinse out the dropper in a seperate bowl of dechlorinated water in between the two meds so you don't OD)

Well, it is made from tea tree oil. The active ingredient is a chemical derived from tea tree oil, without the 'oil' part of it. It is extremely strong. If any of you have ever had the essential oil tea tree, you know what a nice, light airy scent it has. Melafix has a distinctive strong smell.

Bettafix is the same exact stuff as melafix, only diluted more. I just use half the dose of melafix, as it equals the same dosage of bettafix.

I've had wonderful results with both Bettafix and Melafix, but when using Melafix, I always underdose. Use about half or even a forth of the recommended dosage and it should be safe for bettas

Ok, well Melafix and Bettafix are the same thing. And neither of them TREAT finrot. All they do is promote fin growth. My best remedy has been a water change, a dose of JFE, then treat with some heat and salt.

Vanvran, definitely try that. Sounds like your guy still has some bacteria on him that doesn't want to go away. I sometimes use Melafix if it doesn't look like the fins are regrowing as well as I'd like. Otherwise, just clean water and a little salt always work wonders.

What's JFE?

Jungle Fungus Eliminator or Jungle Fungus Clear (what I use). They're little fizzy tabs you get to put in your tank. They work wonders... seriously. My poor Bo got some fin rot (because I had to juggle not wanting to make his swim bladder problem act up and cleaning the tank) and I gave him just one 4-day treatment and all signs of it are gone. There's even some regrowth. And he just looks so much better.
