many people say 1g is the minimum and prefed size is 2 1/2g

but what is the prefered surface area?

as really u could have 100g tank with a surface area of 1 square inch be a very odd looking tall tank but think you may get what i mean

was just curious on this question so thought i`d bug the rest off you with it :p hehe

0I don't know if there is a "preferred" surface area, but the more the better - especially for bettas. They need to be able to breathe from the surface, so if they have "choices" they'll be happier and healthier. :p

More room is better for every fish, although bettas are alwas stuck in little plastic cups, so I suppose they have a right to more room :D

When i use to have my bettas in 2.6 Gallons their tanks measured:
Length 34cm x Width 20cm x Height 22cm and the bettas had room to pace up and down, and enough air on the surface, you obviously dont want to put your betta into a long thing column shaped tank.

When I started fishkeeping the book I had said to stock my tank so as to have 30 square cm for every cm of fish.
