hi i would like to set up a 10l betta tank with 1 male and 1 female is the tank an ok size and will they fight
also would it be possible to have cherry and amano shrimp in with the or will they be eaten

Males and females cannot be kept together; you can get one male or one female.

As for shrimp it would depend on your bettas personality. Some will instantly eat the shrimp, some wont be bothered. Ghost shrimp are usually more recommeded with betta since they are cheaper and larger.

oh ok then i will leave the shrimp
but can you have more than one female or male in one tank and do you need a light or a filter

In a 10 gallon tank you could have 5 females. Definately not more than one male per tank.

If your tank is only 10 litres then I'd stick with one male or one female.

You'll need a filter and a heater; the light is more to make it look pretty than because the betta needs it.

so in any tank you can only ever have 1 male but as many females as you want
also why cant you have a male and a female together

One male or as many females as the tank can hold. A 10 litre tank can only hold one betta, either a male or a female. You can't have more than 1 female in a 10 litre tank because it is too small.

A male and female in the same tank will most likely kill each other, and in a 10 litre tank, it's not 'most likely to' but 'definitely will' kill each other because of the size.

ok just to let you know i want one female
but in any tank size like a 100l could you have a male and a female

And just to clarify you could have as many female as you want if the tank is larger enough.
but only 1 male in any tank

It is not advisable to have a male in the same tank as any females, whatever the tank size. You will read about the odd person who has got away with it, but they are very much the exception. Usually at least one fish ends up dead.

Edit - yes only one male per tank. As for females, depending on the tank size, either 1 female or a group of 4 or more females. With 2 or 3 females, they will squabble, and the dominant female will pester the others and stress them. With four or more, the aggression is spread out more so no one fish gets picked on all the time.

ok thanks
but how do you breed them if they can not go in the same tank

You put the female in with the male for a limited amount of time while they mate and then wisk her on out.

I wouldn't recommend putting females into a tank together. When I tried that, they ripped each other to shreds.
