i have a sneaky feeling that my sons betta has swimbladder, probably from over feeding, hes in a 20L tank on his own all water stats are as they should be, i have done a full water change and about to try a pea but if hes not interested what should i try? also will lower the water level so he can get to the surface for air, i can lower the heater so still submerged but not the filter as its in the hood, so what do you suggest for the lower water level, or will it be ok with no filter for a while?

With frequent and regular water changes, it should be fine for a while with no filter.  Although if your filter is cycled then turning it off could eventually cause you to loose your bacteria and have to start over on the cycle.  My personal recommendation is for you to leave the water level as it is and add plants or other things for him to rest on that are closer to the surface so he doesn't have to work hard to breathe.  I recommend frozen daphnia instead of peas for helping to get rid him of bloat or constipation.  I also suggest raising the temperature to around 80F or 82F depending on what the current temperature of the tank is.

I too recommend daphnia, that worked for one of my fish when nothing else would.

thanks guys, i have raised the temps already, stilly question but what is daphina?

Not sure if this is the brand you'd want to go with it, but it gives a description: FROZEN DAPHNIA
