I am looking to get a small tank to keep at my Mum's house round the corner from where I work and want to house a betta in there with something else to keep the bottom looking interesting.

I am thinking of getting a bulldog plec or maybe a couple of cory's. The biggest the tank will be is about 12"x7"x8". Is this plan feasible or isthe betta really going to have to stay in there on his own. I am open to suggestions for other tank mates if there is any that will be ok for this size tank.

12 x 7 x (8 (inches cubed)) = 2.9090909 US gallons according to google.

So I'd say 2.5 to account for material thickness, air at the top, and anything else you put inside.

I thought I was being a bit hopeful

Thanks for the info though. Would I be able to keep frogs in with it in a tank that size.

African Dwarf frogs don't get big. However, that's pretty small for putting them together too. The betta will have his very own world in there and love it.

You can put a single African Dwarf Frog in there, but if you're putting something in there for added interest, the frog probably won't be your best choice. They're very active in larger tanks, and not so active in smaller tanks -- in my experience. They tend to be bottom dwellers that hide often. I have three in a 5 gallon at the moment, and for all the world, I couldn't tell you if they were dead or alive in the 'daytime'. I think they're great guys.

For a 2 gallon tank, you can add ghost shrimp (very active creatures). They tend to be victimized by aggressive bettas, but in a well planted/cavey type of tank, they'd live quite some time with a more passive betta, and eat all the leftovers.

Thanks soritan, think that is the way I am going to go.

Really looking forward to aquascaping the tank as well. I was an aquatic virgin the first time I did a tank and even when I ripped that out and re-did the tank I still look at it now and think I could have made a better job of it!! Really going to plan what I want then tank to look like this time so I get acool tank for the Betta to live in!! :p :p
