Hi there, a while back i posted a thread on here just asking some questions about bettas as i was looking into saving one but i have become confused again and although i still havn't found a betta yet i would just like to ask a couple more questions;
a. from what i have gathered bettas like smaller tanks to bigger ones; in your experience what is the best size? I was looking at maybe 5 to 10 gal?

Im looking into getting a 200gal tank in the next couple of months- would this size tank be out of the question for a betta amoungst other fish?
b. I have noticed alot of people saying on here that bettas don't like strong filter flow/current if any but if you don't have a filter how do you keep its tank cycled? I see alot of pics of peoples bettas in rather large jars with no heater or filter- how do you keep the fish healthy and happy in such a place?
Say i go for a 6gal, would i need a filter and what would be the recommended size? would the smallest version of the fluval filter series be ok?

Thanks for your time and any info is much appreciated :)

No, I really wouldn't do it. Not with males anyway, with a group of females you might get away with it. It would limit your stocking too much and he'd probably get waaay tired from all the swimmying.

Well - I could go on for days about the subject because there's so much to talk about. :) In my experiences, 5 or 10G tanks are great. Although, 2.5G tanks are great for bettas too. with the smaller tanks, say something you can pick up and dump out regularly (lke 1 - 3 gallons) - if you do 100% water changes, you don't have to cycle the tank.

I also have a couple of 10G tanks with bettas in them (one is a female community tank and the other is a divided tank) and I LOVE them.

Just make sure the filter's current isn't too strong because they hate strong current. I also wouldn't put a male betta in with other fish - it's too risky because you never know their personality and can turn out to be bad news.

I know a lot of people do sponge filters with their bettas. If you do get a filter such a whisper or something to that affect, make sure it's adjustable so you can turn it way down and that there's a current-free zone somewhere in the tank where he can get away from it when he wants to.

Thanks for the advice :)
In the 200gal im planning on creating a variety of enviroments, say with different types of planting in each corner.
I heard bettas live in rice paddys in asia where the current is barely flowing; if i created a rice paddy style enviroment with lots of tall upright growing grass like plants in a corner of the tank where the flow wasn't strong do you think a male betta would be ok?
Im mainly thinking of getting livebearers and letting my common plecs grow in the huge tank, im supposing guppys are out of the question with a male betta but in a tank that big would it be ok?

Unless you divide off a chunk, then its still a no. You can't put anything like tetras in the tanks that will bite, or is a bright colour, and you might get a really aggresive betta. You never know.
