Hi,

I have 3 female bettas in a 5 gallon tank. They are only babies so still very small. I do a water change of about 50% every week. At the same time I throughly clean the glass and gravel. All the water stats are fine.

My problem is algae. It seems to appear over night and is growing out of control. I have got green algae over the glass and it is covering all the plants. I have brown algae covering the gravel too. As quick as I am at clearing it, it is growing back. I have a 15g community tank and very rarely have a problem with algae. The lights are on for approx 10 hours a day in both tanks.

Am I getting an algae problem cos the tank is small and therefore more prone? Also I do have a few run away snails in there. R they adding to the problem? I am getting a 10g or maybe even a 15g tank for them at the weekend. I think a bigger tank would be easier to look after but will that help my algae problem? If not what could I do to help solve, short of not having the lights on.

Any help would be good.

Do you have any live plants in there, or are they all silk? If you do not have live plants, I would suggest a product called "Algae Destroyer." I use it in my 10 gallon, and it works great. There is only a tiny bit of algae in there, and whatever does grow, my inca snail eats. :)

Hi,

I do have live plants in there. Is an inca snail the same as an apple snail as I was thinking of getting some and seeing if that helps.

I am trying to cut down on the hours that the lights are on but finding it hard as then I can't see the little ones too well.

Ta for all advice

No wonder my tank started getting algae in it.. I just put in a few live plants in there..
