Heavily planted 20 gallon, would like some tankmates. Suggestions? Assuming microrasboras will be eaten

Betta pugnax and... Crispii! Because they go hand-in-hand.
Jk

As for tankmates, perhaps you can do any species of Trigonostigma as the top/mid dwelling fish and Pangio sp. as the bottom dwelling fish.

I don't have experience with Betta Pugnax.
But my experience with Betta Imbellis (another wild Betta), they are very peaceful.

I kept them with Cardinal Tetras and Green Kubotai Rasboras in a 25gallons tank and my Bettas didn't bother the schooling fish.

I think you can consider the average size Rasboras like Harlequin, Espei, Green Kubotai, etc

Or you can consider some peaceful Tetras like Neon, Cardinal or probably Red Phantom Tetras, Rosy Tetras, etc.

But when they started to breed, probably you have to separate them to prevent other fish from eating their eggs or fry.

It's just a single b. Pugnax :)

Do you have any schooling fish that you like?
Or do you need any recommendation?
In terms of colours, Cardinal and Neon are very striking.
But I find that Red Phantom Tetras and Rosy Tetras are more interesting with their different colours fins.

Some Red Phantom Tetras(wild caught) have yellow and black colours on the fins which are beautiful and unique.

Rosy Tetras have white tip on the fins which are also beautiful and interesting.
Red Phantom and Rosy(wider body fish) are more interesting than Cardinal(slim body).
