A "phan" is generally just a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. I was curious because the actor who played the Phantom in the film version is named Gerard Butler.

I gave Phantom his name, because he'll slowly glide thru the water, like he's a phantom. I gave Gerard his name, because I was listening to MCR, and that's the lead singer's name.
