Or is a tank with a lightless hood ok. The Betta can be kept in a naturally lit room.

Do bettas appreciate decorations? I'm trying to plan a small Betta tank.

Also, if a small (5gall or so) tank is just for one lone betta, and has no filter, would that be ok? How often should water changes be done?

If a rooms temperature fluctautes between 20-25°c from morning to afternoon and back again, should the tank have a heater set to around 25°c?

i dont think bettas 'need' a light, so it should be ok. They do like something to rest on like a plant or 2... silk or real should be alrite, but if ur not going to have a light you should stick with silk plants. It's better to try and keep the temp constant or as constant as possible so its probably better you had a heater, a 25w should be fine. And for the filter a small sponge filter should be alrite but if you decide not to have one you just have to keep up with the water changes, but imo a filter keeps the water clearer anyways. Hope i have been of some help. :D
p.s are you going to cycle the tank?

if no filter, then not much to cycle I would have thought.
If filter, then a snip of my main tanks filter media will be used :)

My betta tank has a filter. It's lit by the lighting fixture in my room at night, and in the day, it's lit by sunlight. But not direct sunlight. And my tank has no heater neither. My betta appreciates decorations, but he hates plastic plants.

Thanks for that. I have put a filter and a heater in the tank, with a sandy substrate.
Next paycheck will see the decorations go in ;) Was thinking of having a small root like piece with some white stones (big pebbles) around it, and low light plant at the back :)
