I'm sitting at work, bored, and I just had an idea.
One of the problems with people mistreating bettas is because of misinformation. Most people would rather give their betta a nice home if they knew how.
I think the hobby would be better if new fish owners were more informed, either at or before their first betta purchase.
A big problem is the "betta kits" they sell in pet stores. The cheap .5 litre jars that come with some dechlor and food.
A nonprofit organization could strike a deal with an aquarium manufacturer and purchase a bulk of small tanks, say, 5 gallons. The tanks could be packaged with betta food, dechlor, small filter and heater, but also a small booklet of proper betta care. Then they would be sold at cost.
Most people just buy the starter kits, because they don't want to go to all the trouble of setting up a whole tank... they also don't know how, or even that they should.
