Hi my name is Chantay. And I have a violet female Betta named Fred, and she is a year and a half old. Her color is good. Fins look fine, except for a little wear/tear where I had to quickly seize her by her back finnage when she flipped out of her water unexpectedly while cleaning her tank. I noticed she has not been eating much the last two weeks or she will spit out or ignore her food and not eat at all. I keep her in a 1/2 gallon tank, since I figured she needed more room than that murky bowl she was in. I keep the water room temperature, and the heat on because its cold here in MI. (No tank mates) I change her water once a week, and do the 25%, 50% water changes as suggested. This weekend when I cleaned her tank the water was filled with bubbles after I cleaned it and did not go away, I put her in the tank and she puffed and puffed, and darted about I got alarmed and took her out. I immediately re-cleaned the tank and put less conditioner in. (I am using a new one called Brite N Clear by Mardel). I wondered if the water was acidic to her. Anyhow I let the water sit for awhile before putting her in, and there were still tiny bubbles, but she seemed fine. I noticed that she had a white sac on her stomach I never saw before so I immediately went to look it up and I also called a local exotic aquarium and I was told it was an ovipositor, something about breeding time, and that her behavior would last for about this length of time, two weeks and that is was fine. So after that I studied her again and calmed down thinking that was what I was seeing, an ovipositor.
BUT upon studying her again I saw that the sac become lower until it appeared to be string like flesh with a little sac on the end hanging from her stomach. (I have not bred her as I don't have the experience to). Is this some type of breeding behavior, and though she has not been bred this is supposed to happen? I apologize if my questions seem silly, but I did not buy Fred, or knew much about Bettas when I "rescued" her from my baby sister who had her submerged in cloudy, dirty water when I got her and cured her of an infection that left her nearly colorless. I need help!
Also, studying the water now the stringlike material that was hanging from her stomach is gone, but I once again see a little white sac. The water has white particles floating in it when stirred..maybe feces..looks like shedded tissue of some sort..and I don't like the way it looks. I am desperately wanting to change her water again, but I am afraid it would kill her. That would be 3 water changes within 3 days. Someone please advise me as to what I need to do. I love that little fish, PLEASE HELP!
