My friend recently moved out of state and left me with a Betta she couldn't bring with her. The only problem is...my tank is brand new and not yet cycled. (I've been looking for 100% ammonia but am having no luck, so am now waiting for my local fish store to supply me with Turbostart by Fritz-Zyme (I can't get Bio Spira anywhere as the manufacturer can't keep up with demand, and I've heard this other refrigerated nitrifier works nearly as well).
I'm worried about my new fish. He looks tremendously happy in the new tank (he'd been in a small bowl for quite a while) but I'm wondering...should I take it out and put it back in a bowl until the tank cycles? I'm not sure how long this will be. If I can get the Turbostart for a decent price it won't be until next week, and it takes 5 days to work...so the Betta would be in a 16 gal tank by itself for that amt of time. If the pet store can't get it or it's too expensive I'm going to have to find ammonia somewhere and do the "regular" sort of fishless cycling--which could take much more time and mean more time the Betta is stuck in a smaller bowl. (I have a 1 gallon bowl, tho' I suppose I could go out and buy another one, of course.)
I'll keep an eye on ammonia and nitra(i)tes but I don't want to kill the poor thing in the meantime.
Thanks!

PS The betta is in a warm (74 deg) freshwater aquarium. The only things I've done to "cycle" the aquarium so far is to put some gravel from an established aquarium in the external filter with the other media and add a plant.
