I put Mr. Zombie Pants in his new eclipse 3 and right away saw his fins get stuck to the intake and him swimming hard away from the current. I'm concerned because we just got over a blown tail. Any tricks on slowing down this filter?

I took off the strainer basket and stuffed half of an aquaclear 150 sponge into it, with alot of twisting and pushing. The current is better now. Will this work for the long term...The sponge won't get sucked into the motor and explode or somthing will it? The fit seems very tight, I coudln't pull the sponge back out when I tried, but does anyone else have any ideas?

I always use scotch tape, or clear packing tape, to cover the intake holes. Just leave a few open. This actually increases the pull on these few that are left. but they don't seem to get caught in just a few slits open. The sponge should work, but it will be hard to clean the sponge if you can't pull it back out. Is it possible to wrap the sponge around the intake, instead of inside it?

I have my betta in an eclipse and find the current too strong as well.
I didn't want to stop the filter doing its job so I took a piece of tank divider plastic (thin flexible plastic with holes in it) that I had on hand, about 4" wide and 10" long, bent it and made a kind of dam at water surface level with one end jammed against the tank wall, passing around in front of where the water comes out, with the other end jammed into the space beside the water exit. The tank wall end is held in place with a tank divider clip. The water still comes out of the filter at the normal rate but the force is buffered by the dam and the holes. I thought that the dam might simply transfer the force down turning it into a mini Niagara but it doesn't, the holes let enough water through to slow the current without stopping the water completely.
My betta like to float beside the dam; it's nice to see that the current is slow enough that he can do that. Sometimes he'll duck inside the dam just to play in the water current.
sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words:

Thanks for the suggestions, yea I was wondering how I will clean it, I can probably slide it back out with a sharp object. When i tried to take it out it was just to see if the sponge was secure.

An eclipse 3 is three gallons.

Purple: Nice tank! the divider as a dam was a good idea.
