I remember a while ago a couple of members had female bettas with those horrid little wavey things on them, maybe a type of parasite.
I think it was SRC and Elisabeth that had so much trouble.
My male plakat has them on him now and i wanted to know what was the best treatment to get rid of them. Was it sterazin and how did you administer it? was it to the whole tank or as a bath.
I need to know quickly as all my females may get infected as well.
:-(

Ive ordered what you said to get and some ektol fluid as well.
Thanks for that link wilder i'd never heard of them before.

On a side note, if anyone is dealing with an internal bacterial problem and the fish arent eating i had really good results with the medi flake on my kribs that refused to eat. They started to take the flakes and helped some of them get over the disease. Of course it might not help all fish but its the closest we have in britain to an anti bacterial food, even if it does contain garlic.

I had a problem with these white worms too :/

I treated the whole divided tank with Aquarium Doctor Anti Parasitic Treatment and they were gone after 5 days. 2 of the males were particularly covered in these things but went on to fully recover. I did get a case of tatty fins with them too so just added some salt in there as well.

Hope you get a good result with the meds you've ordered :)

Well, I came on to say pm Elisabeth, but she's found you. :D

She had success.

blackangel I'm so sorry to hear you are now having troubles with the white worms :X All of a sudden people are having problems with these white worms and their bettas. I wonder what's going on

I don't know if I can be on any help because honestly I'm not even sure what medication I tried actually worked. I tried Sterazin and that I don't think helped and I also tried JBL punktol for a little while too. I think it was probably the JBL ektol fluid that worked though along with salt and garlic liquid. The JBL punktol could of helped too though. It's been about 3 weeks now since the white worms on my female finally went away and they haven't returned thank god!!!

I've had great results using the JBL ektol fluid of other various illnesses too. It seems to be able to fix quite a lot of problems.

Please keep us updated!!!!

Thanks Elisabeth,Joby,jollysue,Ral and wilder.
I have the sterazin anyway but i havent used it yet.
As for the salt how much did you use?
A little about the set up. Its a uk 50 gallon community tank and it has 5 female bettas and the 1 male giant plakat. Theres a few other small fish along with 3 angels and a plec so i really need to get this under control fast.
The male has never been happy and usually has his tail fin clamped so maybe that opened him up as the weakest, but he will show off to the females now and again and they know hes the boss.
I noticed last night that the male had these bits waving back and forth on the top and side of him and they do look like the things SRC's fish had but not so many.
Its deffinately not a fungus but im pretty sure its a type of parasite but not flukes.
He doesnt seem to be that bothered by them and isnt scratching at all.
I'm glad now i got the ektol fluid as well, I hope it gets here quickly.
Thanks everyone for the concern and i will keep you updated.
I have no idea where they came from as i havent had anything new in the tank for months unless they came with the frozen food as they had bloodworms for the first time in ages a day or two beforehand.
Going to try and research for more info.

Good luck black angel, glad you no what is is now.

Good job, ral. Where have you been all of Elisabeth's life?

That's wonderful news!!!!

Actually these are one of the things I suspected they could be. I think I posted that in my topic...or it could of been in a few pm's to people. I never saw pictures though like blackangel had in her links so it was really only a guess and from some descriptions I read I wasn't sure so I didn't really treat for them :/ From the one picture it's pretty clear that's what they were/are. Weird how you never see it listed in your "common" diseases if it's a pretty common parasite.

I even googled gyrodactylus a few times and visited a few sites and could never find one with pictures  Of course 3 weeks later and the worms on my female have gone I get a conclusive answer :p

blackangel I hope you have good luck in treating..have you decided what your going to treat them with?

edit:

These are definitely some of the symptoms I was dealing with

Taken from the second link posted by blackangel

"Fins.
Fins can become clamped and/or ragged . Often small spots of blood may be observed at the base of the fins.

Body
Lesions may become apparent on the body as well as excessive mucous. Colours of the fish become "faded" in appearance.

Skin.
Areas of haemorrhaging can be observed as well as ulcers, which typically have a circular shape . A slime can be observed over the body in advanced cases. "

Mine had very ragged fins and still do but seems to be finally getting better with just fresh water, salt and some garlic liquid. Only one of the girls actually had the worms but the other girls showed similar symptoms just no white worms. Some I also noticed blackish spots on them..I wonder if those were haemorrhaging areas or some kind of lesions :dunno: Also they had clamped fins.

Who me? I am just a messenger.

Thanks should go to JoAnn, who maintains a wonderful betta site: Betta ED

That site has helped me many times. A bit of coincidence too I guess... since Buckey (one of my Plakats) and Stitch (another one of my Plakats) has similar problems right now. The symptoms of the two fish are a bit different. Think Buckley has flukes while Stictch has fungus. Am not 100% sure.
