From the breeding thread the recommendation is for at least a 40G growout tank. I was checking out the tanks available here and all the 40G and large tanks have a height of 18 inches of greater. I was thinking that I really wont be using more than 6-8 inches of water, effectively making the 40G tanking into a 15G tank. Was wondering if I would be better of using smaller tanks which were shorter for growout since this would provide more floor area.

Example:

35G - 30" L, 16" W
15G - 24" L, 12" W

So a pair of 15G would provide more floor area than a single 35G.

What about something even more extreme like using multiple 2.5G tanks.

2.5G - 12"L, 6" W

4 2.5G's would equal 2 15G's in floor area.

What do you guys think?

sounds like a plan to me might make life alittle harder with more tanks to maintain but then if you're breeding bettas you probably don't worry about the amount of work!

The space/floor area is important, but I think also having a large space together helps in more room to move and grow. I would get the largest one possible in floor length to grow out that is comfortable for you. You can also split the sizes up into different tanks if this could help you.

Thanks Texaswoman.

The ideal set-up for me would be to use 3 15 gallon tanks (24x12x12). If I have them cut down to (24x12x8 or 24x12x9), I should be able to place 3 of these tanks in a single rack. Would save a lot of space.

What would be the ideal water depth for a fry growout tank?

Was talking with the aquarium manufacturer.

Three 24x12x10 (LxWxH) tanks 12 gallon (with 10 gallons of water since I wont fil it to the brim) and a stand would cost me less than $17 for the tanks and $17 for the stand.

This would mean I would put in 8.5 inches of water. Was wondering if that would be okay for betta growout.

Breeders help please :D

The other option would be to use 3 or 4 24" circular plastic bowls about 7" deep. That would only cost $5-$6 altough it would take up more floor area.
