my betta fry are a few days old. the water level is at about 4 inches. im wondering if i can siphon out the crap and add a bunch more water. right now it only has an air pump in there. i have a filter but the water level has to be higher for it to work. they are free swimming. is it ok now to raise the water level to about 10 inches? or should i wait awhile longer?

yea you could use a vac but be careful and dont suck up any babies. and dont add 10 in one day, add about 10r 2 inches a day.

i use a turkey baster. and the stuff i suck up im putting into an ice cream bucket... so if there are any babies in there, i can always suck them outta the ice cream bucket and put em back into the tank. yea i will try adding a milk jug of water everyday until its enough for the filter to be fully submerged

the water wont be moving that much. right now i have about 2 bubbles a second. maybe i wil wait till the bettas are older to put the filter in.

to circulate water. oily water surfaces arent good. stagnant water probably isnt great for bettas either

acutally, baby babies do NOT have their labyrith organ yet, which means at the early stages of life they breathe like other fishies do, that's why an air pump is absolutely ncessary

good luck with the fry :D

why you cant use a filter anyways  bettas hate moving water.
I have a power filter on my fry tank.
I used a mature sponge filter to cover the intake that cut the water flow and then used a piece of craft canvas put it in front of the water output and the water trickles down the front of it and I then have no moving water. This pump ran the whole time the parents went through their courtship and the hatching stage and everything. I will use this from now on.

Actually having a filter in a fry tank is very important. Water quality is probably the #1 or 2 most important item for raising healthy fry, with frequent /plenty of food being the other. The filter should be run slowly to begin with, but it doesn't take long before a sponge filter can be turned on normally.
