Can a Betta damage his gills by flaring them too much?

Since i did a water change (and inadvertedly got rid of his bubble nest) he seems to be flaring at everything including inanimate aquarium ornaments and plants in his tank.

Short answer? Yes.

If he's flairing at things in his bowl, please remove them. Usually just a silk plant will do.
If he flairs too much, he will get stressed, and eventually die.

My juvies are housed next to eachother and flare all day long sometimes. My adults are a little more restrained and only flare occasionally at eachother but they are used to being neighbours now. I have seen no evidence of this activity doing any damage to their gills or stressing them out as they are all in perfect condition and eat well but I'm not saying that it can't cause stress either, I just haven't seen it happen with mine.

Hopefully he will settle down soon and re-make his bubblenest and stop the harassing of innocent aquarium decorations :D

Question is this at nite???

Where I'm going w/ this is - he might be seeing his reflection (at nite) and be flaring his butt off. :D
