Hi everyone, I have a Betta that Ive had since I first started keeping fish (1.5 years ago) and I didn't really know what I was doing yet. He used to have some fun rot which made his fins grow back a bit clamped.

A while ago I noticed he had this weird fused bit on his tail where it had grown back wrong, but last night I noticed it had burst or been caught on something and my Betta was heavy breathing and resting on the bottom only going up for air.
His water is normal but I did a 50% water change and I've been using melafix the last couple of nights.
I don't really know what to do, any advice would be appreciated
I'll leave some photos below

Hello and welcome to the forum! :hi:

Please, please, please don’t use Melafix. Melafix contains a chemical that coats bettas labyrinth organ (the organ they use to breath), and it could suffocate them.

Is it still swimming around? Is it having trouble staying upright?

Oh wow I had no idea it did that, is it bad for gill breathing fish too?
He isn't swimming unless I poke him which isn't normal, but he stays upright when swimming

It will not harm gill breathing fish, but it will harm all labyrinth breathing fish. (All fish in the Gourami family)

This is a tough call... the betta is obviously suffering and there is nothing that can help right away.

As of right now, the water changes will help over time. Some Kanaplex will also help with the infection.

It’s your call. If you personally believe it is suffering to much, euthanize it. If you think it has a chance, and it’s still acting mostly normal, continue with treatment.

Yes I'm agree, I don't think he would recover from this.
I'm going to euthanize him, poor thing
Thanks for the advice man, I appreciate the help

Ok, that is a tough choice, but a humane one. :(

How do you plan to euthanize?

No, wait! The fish needs good, clean water and aquarium salt. He doesn’t need to be euthanized! Do a 75% water change and add 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water. After first day, only add 3/4 tablespoon of salt for every 5 gallons. Make sure salt is dissolved first. Do this for 10 days and see how he looks. If no better after that time, then treat with both Kanaplex and Furan-2 if you’re in the U.S,
