I was wondering if my daughter's betta has fin rot. I have read that fin rot shows up as black along the edges of the fins, but this is not the case with this one. It seems that his fins are getting shorter, and the edges only appear to have lost color (almost white opaque). I don't have any pictures up yet, but I'll try. Can anybody help?

The signs of fin rot include the fin and ray tissue becoming opaque, blood streaked and eaten away. It is important to catch this errosion before it reaches the fin base, as this leads to the fish's death.

The culprit is usually the Aeromonas or Psuedomonas species of bacteria.

Medications for the treatment of fin rot include Myxazin® and MelaFix®.

Do keep the water clean and may your daughter's betta get well soon.

Edited: Link to medications.

I'm not an expert, but since no one has replied yet, I think if the tail is getting shorter, it's very likely to be finrot. I use Tetracycline for that.
