Hi all,

My male Betta died on Saturday very suddenly, this post is just to describe what happened to see if anyone has experienced this before.

O.K Sat morning Betta is fine, feeds OK and is swimming about quite happily. Early afternoon I notice that he is sat on the bottom looking a little pale, 30 mins later his body has become completely white and almost transparent (He was a deep red all over b/f this), his fins/tail are still red and his eyes are very cloudy. He occasionally makes it to the surface to get air but doesn't seem to be able to see or control where he is going properly and keeps bumping into things. Another 30 mins later he is dead. I added some anti slime treatment in the middle of all this as this was the only reference i could find for his symptons (cloudy eyes) but to be honest, there was no sign of any slime or velvet (I had to try something).

I will get a new male this weekend but just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on this.

Water paramaters are fine and have not changed, nor has the temp etc. All other fish are completely fine. One or two of you may spot the prescence of a RTBS in the tank but he did not chase or go near my Betta in the year that i had him. None of the other fish in the tank ever bothered him, in fact he used to chase most of them occasionally.

Sorry to go on, any thoughts would be much appreciated.

i doubt any fungas or disease can kill a fish within an hour..have you considered the idea of poisoning somehow? the only thing i can think of is some kind of poison going through the water that can kill that fast :/

in any case, i'm sorry that your male was the one that got hit :X

I'm sorry to hear about your fishy. :byebye:

It sounds like he had some sort fungus. I know that there is an eye fungus that clouds their eyes, but don't know if that's what your fish had. The bumping around may be because he couldn't see where he was going. (?) Below is the information I've gathered for eye fungus:

EYE FUNGUS:

SCIENTIFIC NAME: varies according to fungal species

COMMON NAME(S): eye fungus

SYMPTOMS: Eyes may appear to have a white coating.

ORGANISM: saprophitic fungi

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT: A mixture of Potassium dichromate and Silver Nitrate works the best. This is available through Aquatronics as Eye-Fungex. First, one is painted on the infected area, then the other. Follow directions on package.

for a betta to die that quickly, i would say he was bullied. the poison theory sounds good but i dont think that is the case if all of the other fish are fine.
i am sorry for your loss though :byebye:
