I am not sure I've ever posted in this forum before!

Serious question, I want to know, I'm not "bashing".

When I was in England, I was a member of an Aquarist Society, and we held open shows, like many of the others. When it came to Betta's, colour right through to the tips of the fins was regarded as good. Fade out, where the colour washes out towards the extremities, was regarded, by the A of A, and FBAS judges, to be a serious fault.

Is this no longer the case? I've seen a few bettas recently, which are supposed to be "superb", but have quite extreme fade out.

You may have been seeing "butterfly" bettas - an accepted color variation in bettas. Fish are judged on how even the band of color (or transparancy) is around all the fins, and on how distinct the line between the body color and the fin color (or transparency) is.
