I have been looking for a new betta for a long time now but i have had to hold off the search as the 10gal i set up and cycled with some pearl danios, laid some eggs in the tank before i rehomed them and now i have tons of danio fry(which i want to keep) but i am too scared to move them since they are so tiny...

I realy don't have the space for another 10gal(as silly as it sounds) but i have noticed many people appear to keep bettas in large jars and i was wondering these questions;
a. How large jar/container would a betta need to live in happily? 5gals?
b. Would the betta be ok in the jar/container with no heating(my lfs doesn't have any heaters small enough to fit in tank less than 15inches)? the room temp in my appartment varys a bit but is genurenly quite warm all day(except at night)- i had a powercut once and the tanks maintained themselves at around 23 degrees.

I would just like to hear your veiws on this as i was inspired by posts of mis-treated bettas and now i want to save a sick one ASAP instead of buying a healthy one; its just my appartment is rather lacking in the space department.
My other tanks aern't realy suitable for bettas- one has fancy guppys and the other has a large female molly in particular who can be a bit of a bully to new fish and although she got along with my last bettas i don't realy want to risk her picking on a new one.

Wellll...
Yes, a five gallon would be perfect. Anything between 1-10 will do nicely.
2.5 being the most common and recommended. I think any poorly,sickly betta would be happy to live with you no matter whatcha do for him (and it sounds like you want to do right by him :wub: )

I live in Texas and its generally warm here, so I go heaterless and run the central heating during the winter. I believe that as long as you are comfortable,your fish will be too :thumbs:

:clap: Bless you for wanting to help the little guys out!!. IMHO the smallest you should keep a betta in is a 1 gal, but I prefer the 2 gal. If your apartment stays relatively warm then a heater shouldn't be necessary, but if you find the tank is too cold for him there are several other things you can do such as sitting the tank on a small heating pad. :)

Cheers for the advice and support :) i suppose you have to have a filter in the container no matter what? How do you go about cycling a container that say is a a 5gal? And what is the advised amount of water you should take out in water changes and how often for such a small tank/container?
I have gathered for most sick bettas all they need is a bit a melafix but should i avoid ones with fin rot? Its just i have heard alot of people having never-ending battles with fin rot...If i do get one suffering from finrot what is the best way to treat them?
And, is Wal Mart the best place to find sick bettas(never thought i'd be asking where to find the worst lfs's to buy fish from!)?

Sorry about all the questions and thanks for your time :)

You can find sick Bettas all over the place. Big chain stores, especially. Walmart just happens to be one of the worst and most well-known perpetrators of crimes against Betta-kind. If you look hard enough, you'll find them.

I have a filter in my tank, but I know that BettaMomma does not use them in hers. They (bettas) are not really fond of the current, and some of them absolutely hate it. I can't really help with water changes for a 5 gal. I don't have one that size so I would be afraid to tell you wrong. :unsure:
