I have been looking at some pictures of drip systems. Getting new water in the tank is easy enough. It is how to get it out of the tank that is harder.

...where it looks like the water overflowing a certian point is how water is removed from the tanks. Was wondering though, isn't it always better to take water from the bottom?

It would be better, but if the water shuts off, the tank would drain and the betta dies. In the pic, they are using beanies. If you use glass tanks, It is very hard to drill holes in the bottom of tank, without breaking the glass. The tanks bottom glass is different than the sides. You have to water cool the drill bit and glass, and drill very slow. Just so you know, Mariannes husband John does not build systems any more. They may still have the plans on her website..bcbettas.com
 
I see the point.

How about using a thin PCV tube inserted into the tank and attached to the outflow. The water level in the PCV tube should be the same as the waterlevel out side it, but the water in it would come from the bottom.
