For my ten gallon, I'm thinking a betta and some neon tetras.. How many neons can I stock in a ten gallon? I know at least five is preferable, but how many for a ten gallon plus a betta?

6 neons and a betta in a maintained and well planted aquarium would be fine. Some people say 10 gallons is too little, but it's one of those things....like discus being too small for 55s and bosemanis only needing 30gs. I happen to believe neons would be "happy" in a 10 gallon as there's no doubt you can keep them healthy in a 10 gallon.

I really think neons need a 15 gallon to swim around in. :/
There are loads of other tetras which would be good in a 10. Embers and green neons to name a couple.

I agree.
I have 6 neons and a betta with two bristlenose plecos in a 15 gallon and even that looks a little bit cramped.
I like the idea of embers though, a shoal of about 6 alongside a blue betta would look really colourful!

I don't think you should be saying neons need 15 gallons if you have two BNs in a 15....

Ouch!
I was only putting my opinion across and am sorry if I offended you.
They don't NEED a 15 gallon and could probably do okay in a 10g without any problems like you said but something slightly bigger is more ideal.
As for BNs they only reach sizes of 4-6 inches and don't need as much space due to their sedate nature.

Wow reading back I did sound very rude and childish :O. Sorry about that, didn't get much sleep last night:p.

I'd suggest ember tetras, six of them. When, and if, you choose some at a lfs make sure to get the LARGER ones out of the pick. We had a case where we bought some, and the smallest immediately became our bettas snack.
