Hello!

Looking to buy some additional shrimp for my planted Tank.

Where do you all like to get your shrimp from? Or do you stick to your lfs?

Thanks

I have bought red cherry shrimps from a local store in the past; some stores sell other colours besides red, but red is the most common in stores.

I have also bought shrimps from eBay with success but that's no longer an option as they have banned the sale of all live creatures. There are a few stores which I have found by googling, though I don't know how good they are for posting shrimps. (I am currently waiting for orange cherry shrimps to come back in stock at Horizon Aquatics but as they are just half an hour from me I'll collect them in person).

Similar to @Essjay, I've bought local and from a eBay seller.

I have actually ventured down to an aquarium store about 30ish minutes from Stafford called Drop off Aquatics. It's located in Dagfields Craft & Antiques outside of Nantwich. They had multiple colours and species of shrimp available when I went. A great plant and dry goods selection too & friendly staff.

If you just want some shrimp and don't care about colours and don't want to spend much. Try and see if anyone local sells "culls". My shrimp are classed as cull shrimp. They mainly have natural colours rather than fully body red, blue, green, etc. I found they are more hardy IME.

I stuck to what I can see and ended with a mixed color colony.

I mean, this guy put every shrimps in the same tank...

But the Neo-caridina won and new patterns are succeeding each other.

But I cant see how they could turn wild soon because there's too much rock solid colors with a Rili thrend and jelly belly.

The wild (cull) types are very varied and you have to look for them, They vanish in decor. But are one of the most striking for me.

Thank you all for your response, much appreciated!

Ill give drop off aquatics a try, ive not heard of them before so its always good to find a good lfs.

I wouldn't mind culls tbf, what sites would you recommend checking for culls? Ebay banning sales makes things harder, maybe facebook?

eBay was the best for shrimp IMO. Facebook Marketplace will definitely have something, though. I noticed a lot of listings was the seller actually selling the whole tank, including shrimp, fish, etc. But I bet there will be people selling from their shrimp colonies :) . Best of luck finding some shrimp.

Just found this video if you want to see what the store is like

There are other shrimps besides cherry shrimps (Neocaridina davidi), though those are the easiest and most popular. Malo referred to mixed colours - I bought some mixed colours off eBay in November 2023 and by June 2024 I had wild coloured shrimp being born in the tank. If you want to keep just brightly coloured shrimp, stay with a single colour not mixed colours.

I tried that last week and all I got was shrimp food!

All I've found just now is one seller with a few listings, sid5787, who probably doesn't care or doesn't realise he's breaking eBay's rules.

I bought from Sid as well. He was very helpful when I asked questions about delivery, acclimation, etc.

His page is still up. @Deanoliv He does a click and collect service (Stoke-on-Trent)

Im not far from Stoke so thats great, its good to see he does culls to as i do like the wild look

Doesn't matter where you get them tbf, all shrimps tend to be the same. You can get them off Pets At Home, Maidenhead Aquatics, or some private owned shop. You can get them off Tropco (I think it's called), or some other online breeder, maybe someone on this or another forum offers shrimps. In my case, I got 30 cherries and 10 amanos from Pro-Shrimp (they're located in UK). Some good £100 :S

£100 is a fair amount! I suppose you pay that for a full coloured colony. My 20 culls were only £24. I did once buy 10 Bloody mary shrimp that cost me £36 didn't have many left at the end of the month from when I bought them sadly..

Mine are just regularly coloured cherries, not very strong colours. But honestly, I care for the animal itself more than what colours it has.
