Hi I read online that it is bad to put the salt directly into the filter for it to dissolve? Is this true? I have just the basic aquarium salt which looks like little tiny rocks. I want to add just a little bit now and again to keep the water healthy as I have Mollies. I have a 55 gallon tank kept at 78 degrees. What would be the best way to add it to the water?

Thank you!

5 Mollies, 4 Platies and an opaline gourami.

and Java fern and Anubias! in case it matters......

I keep salt in with my platys and swords, and i usually dissolved the salt in a cup of water from the tank prior to adding it. I do not know if salt is good for your plants and gourami though..

It's better to pre-mix the salt in a bucket of water and then slowly pour it in near the filter outlet. But personally, I would not be adding salt every now and then (so I would have either constant salinity or none at all) and I would also not want to be putting salt in with the gourami.
